That Spring Feeling...

By: tmhogirl (24 March 2010)

DK Eyewitness Travel celebrate the launch of their new book Where To Go When: Great Britain & Ireland with a poll to find our most popular days out.

From festivals to historic monuments, wild walks to city breaks, spring is all about getting out and about. We polled nearly 2,500 people on where they would like to be heading this spring.

Raising a glass to festival-going

Which festival or event would you most like to experience this spring?

1. Ireland's famous St Patrick's Day (37%) is number one with a tipple of the black stuff in Dublin taking top-spot. The St Patricks Day festival begins in Parnell Square where you can take in the culture and architecture before wending your way to St Patrick's Cathedral

2. One sip at a time… Speyside Whiskey Festival (29%) is a wonderful opportunity for aficionados to sample some of the worlds best Whiskies. Over the 10 day festival you can enjoy gourmet food, hill walking, golf or the end of week Firework show.

The pick of our historic attractions

3. The Key to England, Dover Castle (23%) dominates the famous white cliffs. Once roaring with cannon fire this is now the perfect spot for a Spring picnic with masses of open space and views to die for

4. Stratford-upon-Avon (23%) offers an overflowing cornucopia of sights associated with the playwright William Shakespeare. If literature isn't your thing then the town itself, with its wooden clad buildings, is truly a beautiful spot

5. Dun Aengus in western Ireland (23%). This Iron Age fort has stunning Atlantic views poised on Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands.

The South steals our hearts for city destinations

6. The capital (52%) takes centre stage out of the cities. Vibrant, invigorating and ardently cosmopolitan, London is amongst the top world capitals whether it be for sightseeing, the patchwork of green spaces or taking in some of the fantastic annual events

7. Second was the stunning city of Oxford (15%), one of the two pillars of English education. Absorb the history and opulence whilst taking a punt along the river or admiring the architecture and the wealth of literary prowess oozing from every corner.

Families want to escape to wetter horizons

Which family day out would you most enjoy?

8. The Lake District (46%) in spring is a magical place, covered in golden Daffodils and the shimmering lakes that lend the region its name. Take in the inspiration of Wordsworth or simply get out of the car and take a walk or a paddle

9. A rare spot where palm trees meet seals and right on our doorstep. The Scilly Isles (25%) lie to the west of Cornwall and takes advantage of the weather this permits, hosting an annual rowing extravaganza where enthusiasts and onlookers can share a drink in stunning island scenery.

Going outdoors? Go north on some great British walks…

Which outdoor/wildlife experiences would you most enjoy this spring?

10. Hadrian's Wall (29%) the ancient Roman divide between England and Scotland is now a UNESCO world heritage site. At 84 miles it is ideal for dedicated trekkers but the routes differ and there really is something for everyone

11. The Scottish Highlands have long been an ultimate challenge for hikers. The West Highland Way (25%) can be a daunting prospect at 95 miles but it can be broken up with idyllic gentle sloped Loch Lomond or just taking advantage of the many landmarks scattered throughout 'The Way'

The survey was conducted with YouGov. Percentages reflect those who expressed a preference. Participants were polled on their top choices from days out recommended in Where to Go When: Great Britain and Ireland on 5 themes.
