The Annoying Goody Effect

By: tmhoblogger (06 April 2009)

I am obviously saddened on a human level that Jade Goody, a 27 year old mother of two died so tragically died of cancer, but the overreaction to this is just way too much. It is also great that by ignoring warnings for an abnormal smear scan, she has done so much to raise awareness of cervical cancer and smear tests.

Hopefully, now, the poor girl could be left alone to rest in peace, and her family to grief in private. Today's pictures plastered all over the press of an openingly weeping Jack Tweed visiting his wife's grave is just bad taste. Given the weird relationship this family has with the press, I wonder whether they welcome this continued press intrusion to what must be their private grief, or indeed, whether being in the news means that Jade's legacy lives on.

I know we shouldn't talk ill of the dead, and I am not, but if I read one more thing about the nation supposedly being united in grief for Jade Goody (count me and everyone that I know out of that generalisation), the Diana-like funeral, Sky news' over 4 hours live coverage of the funeral, I would TMHO.

Perhaps some thoughts could be spared for other young mothers suffering and dying from cancer without the luxury of free funerals and a repentant press.

"And on and on and on the Goody thing goes. Yes, sad on a human level but we're not talking mother Theresa here for fuck's sake. Now even the Queen gets in on it all. Enough already as our cousins across the ponds will say"
