US President Barack Obama has signed his landmark healthcare bill into law in a ceremony at the White House. The new law will eventually extend health insurance cover to about 32 million Americans who currently do not have any. Mr Obama said he was signing the bill for people like his mother "who argued with insurance companies even as she battled cancer in her final days". Low carb diets like Atkins 'better for blood pressure'

A low-carbohydrate diet like Atkins is better at cutting blood pressure than weight-loss pills, say US doctors. Twice as many people on the low-carb diet lowered their blood pressure compared to those taking the drug, orlistat. The study, in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found the two approaches achieved equal weight loss and those who received counselling lost the most. The study looked at 146 people who had a range of health problems. Many obese and overweight people are advised to lose weight to help them lower their blood pressure. Medication The researchers from the Veterans Affairs......

Edible ivory

This is a hilarious story- German police are searching for a motorist who beat a 24-year-old woman selling white asparagus because he was upset about her asking price for the coveted springtime vegetable, police said Monday. The prices for white asparagus, sometimes called "edible ivory" in Germany, fluctuate wildly during the short springtime season, peaking early in the season at 10 euros per kilo. The man screamed at the woman that her asparagus was overpriced. He then punched her in the face and threatened to unleash his attack dog at her. She fled......

Bizarre injuries

I was just surfing the net and this story had me thinking about health and safety. This is a new twist about egg on your face- uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/15052009/58/scottish-premier-league-injured-broadfoot-egg-face.html What is so wrong with cooking the old-fashioned way and waiting (doing other tasks)? I like to use my oven these days rather than my microwave, simply because I have discovered that by roasting/slow cooking, I can check and action my emails. Microwave cooking might be convenient but it is not necessarily healthier no safer. So be warned.......

Swine flu, bird flu, bovine flu, I'm all flued out

European leaders sought to downplay the threat of a major outbreak on the continent, saying they were well prepared -- but a top Russia expert warned that the risk of a global pandemic was "very high." "We have been prepared for this kind of scenario for many years," said British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who took part in a meeting of his government's COBRA crisis cell on the fast-moving global health scare. "Swine flu is an international problem now, it's crossed two continents, it's got to be dealt with by international agreements,"......

Health warning for women hairiness

Excessive hairiness in women is not just a cosmetic problem but is likely to be a sign of an underlying medical condition, say UK doctors in a report. Five to 15% of women have excess hair, and a hormone disorder is the most likely cause in many cases, they said. Women with the problem should not be afraid to seek medical advice, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists report urged. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the cause in 70% to 80% of cases. Report author, Dr Rebecca Swingler, a specialist registrar in obstetrics......

Overweight- should I be paid to lose weight?

I was reading an article just a few moments ago, while on a break from work and the article was from the BMJ (some medical journal) debating whether overweight people should be paid to lose weight as an incentive. This would be on the same basis that one South Eastern UK County (Essex) offered pregnant smokers to give up. I personally think that instead of paying the person to lose weight, they should make healthier food cheaper, allow free swimming/exercise classes and tax, I did say tax (it is April......
